Certificate IV in Youth Work

This Certificate IV is a nationally recognised course, which is fast becoming the youth work sector’s required qualification. This qualification is a broad generic course for application across the youth sector.

Who is this for?

Certificate IV is designed to build on the skills of people who develop and coordinate programs for young people in a range of community based programs. It is important that students have current work in a youth setting, which may be voluntary or part time, or that you have access to a youth work setting during the course.

Course content

The course is made up of sixteen competencies. They are delivered through eight topics using a variety of learning methodologies. The methodologies include:

  • Self paced learning guides
  • Readings and reflections
  • One day seminars
  • Tutorials
  • Online discussion
  • Workplace learning activities
  • Workplace assessments.

Students will have a course coordinator who will support their classroom learning and assist with workplace learning and assessments. Because the focus of the course is in applying skills, much of the learning will be done in practical youth work situations. Topics include:

  • Models and practices of Youth Work
  • Youth work in your community
  • Crisis and Conflict
  • Case work
  • Relationship building
  • Legal issues
  • Workplace relationships
  • Juvenile Justice (optional*)
  • First Aid Certificate (not provided by the Institute).

*A separate topic in Juvenile Justice in South Australia will be offered to those students interested in this specialist field of Youth Work.
