Aboriginal Youth Development Program
This program helps deliver nationally recognised youth work qualifications to Aboriginal youth workers in regional centres across the State.
Who is this for?
We provide training and support services specifically to Aboriginal young people in rural and regional areas of South Australia.
About this program
The learning program is structured to offer regular four day workshops in one central location as youth workers travel from Maree, Ceduna, Port Augusta, Meningie and Mount Gambier to attend training. Our educators also travel to each community to provide one-on-one learning support and mentoring. This strategy has enabled youth workers to talk about and demonstrate their skills and knowledge at their place of work. Learning tasks and assessments have been adapted to fit with each unique setting.
Program content
The learning group attends regular workshops, follow individually tailored learning plans and complete assessments, to achieve the Certificate III, IV or Diploma in Youth Work.
Recognition of experience and current skills is a key part of the program. Workers with differing levels of experience share their practice wisdom with one another, exchange ideas and implement new youth work strategies on the job. Individual learning support and flexible assessment methods are also characteristics of our educational approach.
An important component of the learning is the annual Youth Work Summit. The Summit is a residential program that exposes participants to networking opportunities and new skill development through participation in a number of intensive workshops. Previously the Summit program was tailored around the theme of ‘Engaging with young people: Putting the energy back into youth work.’
