Diploma of Counselling
The Diploma is a two year full time (or part time equivalent) course offering counselling and therapeutic group work skills appropriate for use in a range of community contexts. It explores values and ethics associated with counselling processes and addresses specific issues such as dealing with crisis and problem solving.
Who is this for?
The Diploma is primarily designed to build on the careers and expertise of health and community service workers who have completed tertiary study and use or require counselling and/or group skills in their work. This may include teachers or workers in community, youth, health, or employment services. People who do not have this background, but who wish to undertake the Diploma, may also be eligible to apply.
Course content
The course is nationally recognised and consists of 8 modules including a practicum, which can be studied full time over two years or part time over a longer period. The modules are delivered using a variety of learning activities including role play, discussion, small group exercises and, later in the course, supervised practice. Topics include:
- Counselling Skills I & II
- Therapeutic Group Work
- Working with Family Domestic Violence
- Counselling Theories & Approaches
- Issues and Frameworks
- Advanced Counselling
- Practicum and Supervision of Practicum.
Assessement
Assessment will involve a variety of practical and written tasks designed to offer maximum opportunity for participants to demonstrate their learning. There are no formal examinations.

Applications will be considerd from Monday 23 November, 2009 and close on Friday 5 February, 2010.
Applicants will be notified by Friday 12 February, 2010.

Applications are invited from people interested in developing therapeutic group work skills OR in developing skills for responding to family and/or domestic violence.
An information session will be held on Thursday 29 July 2010, from 6pm - 7pm at 49a Orsmond Street, Hindmarsh.
Therapeutic group work commences Saturday 14 August 2010 (runs for 5 Saturday workshops).
Responding to family and domestic violence commences Tuesday 10 August 2010 (runs for 12 evening workshops)
