HIV and HCV Workforce Development Program

The HIV and HCV Workforce Development program assists organisations to extend the knowledge and skills of their staff. Our aim is to support the ongoing learning, review and development of services provided to people affected by HCV and HIV in South Australia. Through this, we hope to prevent HIV and HCV infections and improve the quality of life of people affected by the viruses.

Who is this for?

A diverse range of people attend our courses, including new and existing workers, nursing staff and nursing students, GPs, community care workers and volunteers from a range of community organisations.

About the program

This program works with organisations in the HIV/AIDS and hepatitis C sector to develop and deliver education and training that suits organisational needs. This includes:

  • Nationally recognised training
  • Customised training programs
  • Tailored learning resources
  • Mentoring
  • Workshops and workforce development programs
  • HCV medical education for GPs.

Course content

HIV and HCV sector training calendar

A regular six-monthly calendar of free training events and workshops covering topics relevant to HIV and HCV workers. This is developed in consultation with State-funded HIV/HCV community organisations and in response to skills gaps identified in the State HIV and HCV Action Plans. The calendar includes an introduction to HIV and HCV workshop, delivered at regular intervals.

Nationally recognised training

Workforce development programs tailored to the needs of specific HIV and HCV agencies on request and aligned to national competencies and qualifications. (For example, Certificate III in Telephone Counselling for volunteer telephone support workers; Introduction to HIV and HCV induction training for new workers across the sector.)

Recognition of prior learning

Where an individual worker within the HIV and HCV sectors has life or work experience relevant to a course of study, this can be formally assessed and may lead to the awarding of national competencies without the requirement to attend a learning program. Individuals are encouraged to discuss this with the course facilitator.

Education resources

Development of learning materials and resources relevant to issues of concern for HIV and HCV workers. (For example, Yarnin’ Up Hep C for Aboriginal workers and community members; HIV and the Law Handbook.)

Training workshops for related health, social and community service work groups

Free HIV and HCV education can be provided by negotiation, to non-HIV/HCV sector workers.
