PEACE Multicultural HIV and Hepatitis C Service

PEACE Multicultural HIV and Hepatitis C Service is focused on raising awareness and knowledge of hepatitis C, HIV and other related issues in culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities living in South Australia.

PEACE provides hepatitis C and HIV information and support services to people from multicultural backgrounds and facilitates partnerships between CALD and non-CALD community service agencies and groups. PEACE also designs and delivers community education and community development projects.

PEACE stands for: Personal Education and Community Empowerment. The name reflects the principle of working simultaneously at several different levels to achieve positive change. This is the same principle that underpins the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion (World Health Organisation 1986). We offer community educationand awareness; personal support; professional training and contributions to Statewide policy and planning. The key goals of PEACE Multicultural HIV and Hepatitis C Service are:

  • To improve CALD communities’ understanding of prevention and treatment of hepatitis C, HIV and other related issues

  • To improve support services for people in CALD communities who are affected by hepatitis C and/or HIV

  • To build on the capacity of CALD communities, organisations and relevant service providers to effectively address issues related to hepatitis C and HIV.

Some of the work PEACE has been involved with includes:

  • Developing skills and career pathways for individuals with CALD backgrounds interested in working within the community services field. This is often done in response to the growing number of people seeking to become HIV and HCV community educators

  • Training community educators from Sudanese and central and west African backgrounds  to deliver particular, targeted education programs

  • Supporting other CALD groups to develop community education and media work on hepatitis C and HIV

  • Enabling same sex attracted individuals from CALD backgrounds to participate in service planning and create support activities

  • Delivering a number of cross cultural training packages to mainstream agencies, ranging from short presentations to two-day workshops

  • Working collaboratively with services including Bfriend, Hepatitis C Council of South Australia, Drug and Alcohol Services of SA, PARKS Community Centre, Khmer Speaking Network, Spanish Speaking Network and the Vietnamese Community Association

  • Presenting at conferences such as the Australasian Society for HIV Medicine’s annual conference to highlight issues and methodologies to improve HIV service provision for CALD communities.
