Working with small organisations
We are currently working to provide training and assessment in Certificate IV Disability Work with a small organisation that provides services to people with intellectual disabilities who live independently.
Our approach has involved a partnership with both management and participants of the training. We work closely with management and the staff team to develop a learning environment and build relationships in the small group of participants that supports conversations and discussions, where opinions are respected and learning occurs.
Participants talk about issues and complexities within their work and the content of the training program and assessment tasks are designed and developed as the program progresses. Learning materials and assessments then fit with both the organisational values and the workers needs.
As we get to know the participants though their assessment tasks and though the recognition of prior learning process we are able to develop specific learning strategies for those participants who need individual support in areas like literacy and written communication.
As the staff work across a 24 hour roster system the hours of delivery of the training is organised so that workers can attend without disrupting their clients. An informal shared lunch during the training assists in relationship building between the participants and the trainer.
Participants attend all sessions, even if they have a competency achieved in a particular area. This is so that those staff can share their knowledge with others and also so that the whole group participates in all discussions and share all ideas throughout the program.
